What are the Art Insights?

These Friday Art Insights are a place for us to stop and linger, a place to pause after a long week and learn more about the each and controversial history of art. Every week I’ll spend some time on a specific artwork related to a theme, tracing its afterlife since its creation. By offering different artworks this space, I encourage you to look longer, think harder, and resist the perfunctory seven second look we seem to give artworks when in museums. These short reflections are intended to connect an artwork’s surface beauty to its deeper undercurrents related to history, power, and emotion. At a time when artistic enquiry is threatened by automation, these insights are my reminder that looking closely is a form of resistance.  Sometimes we only need to see a single image to change our entire outlook, a piece of art deserves more than a glance, and this is where I give it one.
